Analysis of two precipitation methods on the yield, structural features and activity of sulfated polysaccharides from Gracilaria cornea (Rhodophyta) Biological Sciences

The global demand for natural products from seaweeds has increased worldwide; however, no description of the use of isoamly alcohol (IAA) for obtaining of sulfated polysaccharides (SPs) has been reported. We investigated the efficiency of two precipitation methods (M) in obtaining SPs from the red seaweed Gracilaria cornea. SPs enzymatically isolated were concentrated with cetylpyridinium chloride (M I) or IAA (M II) and extracts were examined with regard to their yield, structural features and in vitro effects on the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) using normal human plasma and standard heparin (193 IU mg-1). <i>Fosliella farinosa</i> (Lamour.) Howe var. <i>chalicodictya</i> Taylor has been described in 1939 after material from the Caribbean Sea. It has never been mentioned since the <i>descriptio princeps</i>. We found it sometimes while assorting phytosociological relevés from Banyuls and Port-Cros (France). <i>Lophosiphonia scopulorum</i> (Harv.) Womersl., described from Australia, has recently been mentioned by Ardre (1970) along the Portuguese coasts. We noted this species at Banyuls. Both taxa are new for the Mediterranean Sea; the first one is new for the French algological flora.

Seasonal variations in photosynthetic irradiance response curves of macrophytes from a Mediterranean coastal lagoon ArchiMer

The main photosynthesis and respiration parameters (dark respiration rate, light saturated production rate, saturation irradiance, photosynthetic efficiency) were measured on a total of 23 macrophytes of the Than lagoon (2 Phanerogams, 5 Chlorophyceae, 10 Rhodophyceae and 6 Phaeophyceae). Those measurements were performed in vitro under controlled conditions, close to the natural ones, and at several seasons. Concomitantly, measurements of pigment concentrations, carbon, phosphorous and nitrogen contents in tissues were performed. Seasonal intra-specific variability of photosynthetic parameters was found very high, enlightening an important acclimatation capacity.
